Saltwater Pools – The Myth and The Facts…

saltshaker

The Myth:
In salt pools, all you add is salt!!

The Truth:
Salt only replaces chlorine pucks and granulated chlorine.  It will not provide the necessary pH, stabilizer, alkalinity, calcium hardness and algaecide adjustments.  In straight saltwater pools, every other balance chemical is still adjusted throughout the season.
Now don’t get me wrong, we’re not dissing salt chlorination!  A salt pool is a pool that is generating it’s own chlorine through electrolysis to break the salt down into hypochlorous acid and sodium hypochlorite which are the sanitizing agents already commonly used in swimming pools.
Chlorine generation sounds like a whole new world when in actuality, it’s been around in the US since the mid-1970s, but has come into greater popularity since the early 2000s.

Another Alternative:
If you are truly looking for a sanitizing-balancing-all-in-one, then what you may want to check out is the Mineral Springs System by BioGuard.  With Mineral Springs, the salt and balance chems are virtually all included in the initial Mineral Springs Beginnings adjustment.  Only one additive, Renewal, is needed throughout the season as determined by water testing here in our store.
The benefits of the Mineral Springs system are ease of use, the most silky-soft water you have ever experienced, unprecedented water sparkle.  For more information, call Pool Doctors at 256-350-4442 or see the FAQ page by clicking this link http://www.bioguard.com/Pool_Care/Pool_Care_Systems/Mineral_Springs_FAQs

Don’t Ignore Your Pool During Rainy Weather!

This weather stinks!

GRRRR!  Will the rain ever stop?  Of course it will – the weather forecast for next week looks great, so don’t give up on getting ready for swimming season!

Don’t ignore your pool during this rainy period!

IF YOU DON’T HAVE PROBLEMS WITH YOUR LINER FLOATING…Step out back and check your water level…if your water is higher than 1″ below the top of your skimmer, slog out to your equipment pad and empty to waste until you are at the 1″ spot at your skimmer face plate.  IMPORTANT:  Don’t walk away!  Keep an eye on it – if it gets too low, your liner will float, meaning that the water pressure beneath the liner will be greater than the water pressure in your pool.

IF YOUR LINER IS PRONE TO FLOATING…keep it as full as possible – the more water on top of your liner will do a better job of balancing the water pressure beneath it!

Again – HEAVY RAINS = ALGAE!  Keep up with your algaecide dosage!

We are seeing a lot of cloudy pools, remember, a “dirty” filter (less than 10# over normal pressure) will provide better filtration.  Backwash when your filter is 10-20# over normal running pressure! Call us if you have questions – 350-4442

What you should be doing to your pool area before the heat begins!

Summer

May 2, 2013

Will the warm weather ever get here?  I am certain that it will, but until then, don’t ignore your pool.  The days are getting longer and your water temperature is definitely rising – any increase in sun exposure is an increase in the possibility of GREEN WATER!

Don’t wait until you have a problem, get your water tested and be sure you have enough active sanitizer in place to stop a potential algae bloom.

We had a call today from a long-time client describing the small FIRE he had in his swimming pool heater.  Apparently, landscaping around the equipment pad had gotten a tad out of control.  Luckily, this was not a tragic event, but a good reminder to the rest of us to keep that equipment area (pump, filter, heater, etc.) clear of debris, ant beds and general yuckiness!

Which reminds me…keep an eye on the flying stingers around your outdoor living space!  Watch for mud-daubers beginning to find their warm weather homes in and around your equipment.  Remember, if you do find a nest getting started, use a fresh can of wasp spray and wait until twilight before approaching it as the insects will have settled in for the night.
